Donuts and Burgers Are Distractions; Says Science

  • It has been found that high-energy, high-calorie food items distract you from your tasks even if they are completely irrelevant to them.

  • A study of 64 participants was conducted and the ones who had candy bars before their tasks were less drawn to the distractions.

It doesn’t matter what you’re doing and how busy you are; donuts will distract you. We’re sharing with you some of the observations made during a small study that focused on seeing the effects of various foods and objects on our attention spans. It has been found by researchers that fatty and sugary foods distract our attention more than their low-calorie counterparts and hence we’re trained to focus on such foods. 

Coauthor Corbin A. Cunningham stated that the participants did not waste any time in making assessments of the nutritional value of the food images used to distract them, even when these images were completely irrelevant to the tasks they were assigned. 

In this study, a small number of 18 participants were asked to focus on a basic computer-based task given to them. And while they were busy completing the task, images of food products flashed on their screens. It was seen that the pictures causing the most distractions were all of the high-calorie food items which include donuts. Then further in the study, another set of 18 participants were given two small candy bars to eat before they were given the same basic tasks as the previous set of participants. It was observed that the images didn’t distract these participants as much as they already had a sound intake of sugar. All in all 64 participants were included in this survey and researchers found that they were distracted by donuts and other high-calorie food items instead of faces with expressions of anger and disgust. 

According to Cunningham, whenever a person is presented with food stimuli that is of their interest, it ALWAYS causes some degree of a distraction even if it seems to be completely irrelevant to the task they were focusing on in the moment. Furthermore, he stated their study has shown that higher the calorie count in a particular food item, higher will be the degree of distraction caused by that item, regardless of its relevance with the tasks. 

It might be the case that our mind’s tendency to pay more attention to high-energy food was once an advantage in evolution. But that was way before the current obesity epidemic we seem to be facing. Parents who are trying to keep their children away from fatty and sugary diet need to know that the children need to NOT see the food in front of them. A person eats these foods more and gets drawn to them if he sees them in front of him. Experts have said that in order to decrease the junk food intake, it is necessary for you to remove these items from your house otherwise your children will definitely be tempted by them!

Not too long ago experts gave their opinions on the dangers of using a hand dryer in the restroom. Now they’re coming after the mobile usage in the toilet. The reasons are, of course, hygiene related.

A hygiene expert, Dr Lisa Ackerley, says that when you’re done wiping your private parts and go to pick up the mobile device, the remnant bacteria from your hands is transferred onto the device.

So now what happens when you’re done washing your hands after being free from the toilet? You go to pick up your phone and the touch will transfer the bacteria back onto your hands. The wash becomes completely futile basically.

The intestinal bacterium: E.coli

This type of bacteria is most easily described as the intestinal bacteria. It is usually not active hence doesn’t cause any danger. But there have been cases in which this bacterium has caused severe abdominal cramps and vomiting.

The Food Poisoning Bacterium: Salmonella

The food poisoning bacterium is notorious for causing fever, nausea, vomiting, migraines, and cramps in the abdomen and even goes as far as diarrhea, and blood in the stool. The key is to stay away from contaminated foods.

The Abdominal Infection & Inflammation Bacterium: C.difficile

Nausea, fever and pain in the abdomen are typical of this bacterium. In some extreme cases, it can also result in an inflammation of the colon which can be quite dangerous.

Dr Ron Cutler, director of biomedical science at the Queen Mary University of London states that you should deliberately not take your phone into the toilet with you.

This a habit that will keep your body safe from so many diseases. Viruses and germs are not bound to be transferred only by hands and you should be careful to not leave your toothbrush or phone near the toilet.

Not only this, the germs are advancing too. They can now stay active on your phone for days in a row and you wouldn’t notice a thing. The heat from the device encourages the growth of the bacteria and they grow. All you need to do is wash your hands with a soap or hand-wash and water. Keep them dry with a towel and just NEVER take your phone with you into the toilet!

No message or call is urgent enough to compromise your health for it! Stay healthy!

Uli Boehmer said that there he had seen a hidden and silent killer. He is from Boston University having department of public health. He is a great associate professor of community health sciences. Actually in another way he was representing the of LGBT cancer and the gender inequality.

Allied health fields, Direct health professions are health care professions distinct from nursing, medicine, and pharmacy, can help in this big problem.

Boehmer added that LGBT people are have such jobs that do not provide the health insurance. Especially the LGBT women struggle a lot only in order to afford their medication. Boston University have many researches about the cancer disease but this research not only represents the number of patients of cancer or the reason of having such huge number of affected patients. It also represents the gender inequality and discriminations that LGBT community faces in health care.

Boehmer have a lot of exposure in this situation as he have been in it for thirty years. He studied the LGBT community who are affected with cancer disease. Similarly, criticize more on this gender inequalities, and what he call it a fight to bridge the knowledge gap has still annoying. In addition, he is not satisfied with all the measures that have been taken for this issue.

Boehmer said that we need to have exact statistical data of LGBT cancer patients so we can do measures. We can provide the guidelines on which all the measures could be place. And we have create such a structure that may help to get to know of have been happening.
